Switch Project 2009

Kirjoitettu: 4.9.2009

The Truth is NOT Out There … its in Here
Pispala Cultural Association welcomes you to the Exhibition Opening of “Truth” in connection with 4th Pirkanmaa Triennial this coming week!
OPENING 11.9.2009 at 6.00 p.m. The opening is free and open to all.

Pispala Contemporary Centre a.k.a. Hirvitalo Hirvikatu 10 Tampere
The Exhibition will run 11.9 - 4.10

Exhibition Curator: Markus Petz
“Truth” is the name of the current exhibition now on at the Pispala Contemporary Center, in Pispala opposite the library. It is being run as part of a series of events under the theme γνῶθι σεαυτόν – Organizing the Structure of Conspiracy. In addition there will be Art Mondo on 22 September, in the Pispala Contemporary Art Center and the same night Disco Occult in the Vastavirta nightclub.
The events are part of the the 4th Pirkanmaa Triennial, which will see events in many of our best art venues in Tampere. Truth showcases a range of artistic views from across the world. There are anonymous contributions that deal with the current political reality here in Finland as well as artistic works from Africa, Asia, North America and other European countries.
Works come from both artists and activists and range from installations to video pieces. There will be live webcasts, film screenings and paintings and other of visual pieces. The art seeks to question - as all art should - our place in the world. At the opening there will be live music from Frankie Shannon, the play Vaaliralli will be performed and Orgonisaatio will be placing Orgonite Healing Devices and explaining the philosophy of Wilhelm Reich and how it applies to us today.
The whole show can be contextualized as follows:
Contextualization
As long ago as 1651, in his book “Leviathan” the English philosopher Thomas Hobbes compared the complex structure of a modern country to that of a sea monster which had grown in size beyond the scope of human understanding. Now in the fourth century after the release of Hobbes ́ book, the monster has grown even more in size and complexity. Bigger than ever before! For many, it is difficult to see oneself as a part of this huge creature. While people are trying to get a grip of it’s complexity, different kinds of theories are born - including those of conspiracies.
The conspiracy theories that can’t be proven either right or wrong can become prophecies of their time. There’s no hereafter or apocalypse that would prove their existence - or thereby non-existence. Thus contemporary “modern” societies have also the official media-religion with its own prophecies. People who are creating the alternative theories are the heretics that challenge these “officially approved” prophecies.
In ancient Greece, the proverb gnōthi seauton - know thyself was scribed above the door to the Temple of Apollo, inside of which the famous Delfoi oracle gave prophecies to people seeking wisdom and answers.
The modern day Hero, Neo of the movie Matrix encounters the same proverb in Latin when consulting the Oracle guide in the tale. This phrase can therefore be understood as counsel for those trying to understand prophecies - for true understanding of wisdom given from outside, we should first look into ourselves. Perhaps after that we can decide which prophesies we take for the truth?

Hakikat Orada Değil… O Burada

HEAR WITH HEART CINEMA PRESENTEERT

A close up of the face of a man with a white veil drinking milk, the camera follows the milk dripping down the man’s body before it lands on a reproduction of ‘l’Origine du monde’ laid on the table. In a split of a second the man is a victim of his reserve and his resistance to sex, from his mouth he lets the milk drip onto the image!

video title: Personal Text Public Body
2007, 15 mins
Personal Text Public Body is an ongoing interdisciplinary project which explores autobiographical, relational and political aspects of the self(s). Part of the creative process involves making short films termed as ‘Performative Documentaries’. This selection of short film episodes intertwine inside (studio) and outside (urban) locations mirroring the intimate and social aspects of the performers. A range of themes unfold such as; autobiographical memory, the nature of boundaries, the links between private and public performance, the extent to which all social action is ‘performance’, the way emotions and dreams are embodied, and the bodily expression of the self(s). By presenting this heterogeneity of movement and spoken narratives, the episodes are intended to stimulate thinking and body awareness around how we can ‘re-vision’ our identities in more expansive ways and recognise that to do so, is a political act.

Media reality, feminism, cyberspace and the interaction of the spectator. Infern domèstic opens a debate about reality, utopias or chaos, definitively feministic.

The artist is turning a basic action of cleaning his guitar into a hearable performance. He is showing the invisible visions in an ironic way.

I’m in front of a black background. My head is in the middle of the image. I pull a plastic bag over my head. I close it airseal and start breathing. The sack inflates and draws together over my head. The breathing becomes faster. The attempt is interrupted in because of panic and lack of air.

Elia Alba (Domenican Republic)
video title: If I were a…
2003, DVD; 3:52 minutes
In collaboration with Nicolás Dumit EstévezIn this video, a male performance artist tries on three “bodysuits” that carry the distorted image of my own body in the guise of three different “races”: white, black and mixed. While I was born in the US, both my parents are from the Dominican Republic. My racial history or mix comes from the island’s racial makeup. Manipulating the color of my own body through computer technology and enlarging genitalia and other body parts associated with particular racial categories, I present myself in the guise of three “crudely placed together” races. Throughout the video, the male performer, wearing a mask of my face, “uncomfortably” enacts the gesture of “trying on” these female bodysuits. The body images and the gestures underscore the precariousness concepts of race.

Elektra’s pain and anger for Agamemnon’s death, suggested by Sylvia Plath’s verses.“I was looking for the emotions of a poem evoked by a Greek tragedy, putting a human figure in the middle of a bare natural landscape. The sound effects interact with the voice as the colour effects with the framing.”

video title:Untitled (edited performance 3)
2007, 7:00
This is the third of a three part video/performance series by Joshua and Zachary Sandler. As children we would bathe together like most young siblings. Baths were always a time where it was ok to be naked, and to indulge in the absurd and imaginary. Intimacy was not as restrictive for us as it might have been for most in our upper middle class suburban world and we find comedy in the line that is drawn between adolescent and adult behavior. Stylistically we took from classic cinema and its sometimes-tortured starlets; contrasting surface level glamour & poise with the opposite, with insecurity and burgeoning pain and suffering..

List of short films to be shown at the Film Club

1. Bela Tarr PROLOGUE 5 min (Hungary)
Prologue, Stunningly paired with Mihály Vig's repetitious and mournful
waltz, this film offers us a singular and far-reaching addition to Visions of
Europe that cements, once again, Tarr's grim view of the working class in
Hungary, and elsewhere.

2. Wim WENDERS 12 MILES TO TRONA 11 min (Germany)
Wenders' contribution drew upon a personal experience that he has not often
openly discussed—an accidental drug overdose that occurred 33 years prior to
making a film that concluded with the director being rushed to hospital and
nearly dying.

3. Victor ERICE LIFELINE 9.30 min (Spain)
A short film that is poetically dense which, in some ways. returns to the theme
of the haunted rural world of SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE. “In the dark ... the
cry of a new-born ... baby breaks the silence of the countryside ... on a hot
summer's evening”.

4. Hervé CONSTANT BETWEEN TWO WORLDS 8 min (France)
Strolling with camera in hand along the banks of the Serpentine, in Hyde Park,
the artist and filmmaker Hervé Constant lingered at a favourite spot, near the
boating section. Everywhere he looked he could see that everyone was
‘doing their own thing ... it was peaceful ... glorious!

5. Peter GREENAWAY EUROPEEN SHOWERBATH 5.30 min (England)
The film shows us naked men and women of differing sizes, each with the flag
of their country painted onto their bare flesh. Eventually the shower is
crowded, and the smaller countries find themselves standing on the outside
looking in. Then the shower stops. It's too late for them.

6. Lello LOPEZ MONNEZZA 4.45 min (Italy)
Naples at the time of the Rubbish issue: It’s Sunday, the Corpus
Domini procession is celebrated with prayers said by the priest and
believers along the route.
Entr’acte: 15 min

7. Bernardo BERTOLUCCI HISTOIRE d’EAUX 11 min (Italy)

with refugees. He sets off in search of some water and along the way he runs
into Marcellina, a 30-year-old woman who is hopelessly trying to re-start her
scooter.

rock Café Space Abano.

11. Agricola de COLOGNE TRUTH PARADISE FOUND 3 min (Germany)

possible. But who ever will succeed while living a life dominated by the fast
running time and endless searching?
This was filmed at the Rila Monastery, which is the spiritual centre
of Bulgaria

BLUEBANANA Video Contest, Landau, Germany - BLUEBANANA “Su” Temalı Video Art Festivali, Almanya, 2009

“Etude”
by Dario Bardic (2007, 3:20, Croatia)
An étude (a French word meaning study") is a short musical composition designed to provide practice in a particular technical skill in the performance or to demonstrate technical virtuosity. Video ETUDE takes this definition to the upper-(visual) level. It is a surrealistic experience that stimulates everyone’s subconsciousness. It questiones the human relations and the eternal pursuit of perfection.

“Foreigner-Straniero”
by Giuseppe Girardi (2008, 6:56, Italy)
Foreigner is not only the one who lives far away from his country but also the one who lives a distance in everyday life...distance as homesickness, wanting of an "existed" existence, where dimensions of living can find a contact point...

“Anatolia”
by Sinasi Günes (2006, 2:18, Turkey)
This work contains images of womans who lives in Anatolia and have a different cultural features and relations of woman and womanveling are scrutinized.

“Coagulate”
by Mihai Grecu (2008, 5:56, Romania)
Absence, presence and aquatic distortions in this choreography of fluids, mysterious forces twist the physical laws and affect the behaviour of living beings in purified spaces

“JOINED AT THE HEAD”
by David Jakubovic (2008, 4:40, USA)
A monologue from the play 'Joined at the Head' comes to life as Jim confesses his guilty, personal feelings about what he is going through as his wife is dying. Imagination, thoughts and reality, as well as past and present, are all mixed up as a picture is painted about a deep confusion in Jim's mind, as he confronts love, hate and hopelessness of a situation he can do nothing about but observe

“Who is Miri Nishri”
by Miri Nishri (2008, 14:00, Israel)
The movie begins with a question – who is Miri Nishri? This question will continue to haunt us as the mystery unravels but is never to be resolved. Many characters puzzled by this enigma are looking at us from the screen with various answers, only more puzzling. Some of them claim that they were Miri Nishri for a while, others give vague details of the life and identity of a woman of that name as fuzzy memories of a long forgotten meeting or relation. Miri is an entity build from random associations and shreds of being and identities who seldom add up.

VIDEOPLAY 09 “Electronic and Sensitive”

18 - 31 March 2009

On VisualcontainerTV - videoart webTV
Special Videoart selection from Buenos Aires Argentina
VIDEOPLAY 09 “Electronic and Sensitive” includes records, video performances and other works which, though not clearly framed within the category of art-action, reflect a deep anchorage in the performatic sphere. It is an attempt to reveal the presence of the body that is trapped and mediatized by video technology or else, to highlight the no-presence of a body that has become virtual and electronic. The selection “Electronic and Sensitive” constitutes an opportunity of access to the best possibilities resulting from the interaction of art and technology. The vitality of the creation in video art appears and shows in works that leave aside the mere experimentation to look for the depth of meanings. All the artists include in the selection show a maturity in the field that makes them get a greater richness in their speech. Almost all the works denote a semantic quality that lets them move through the most subtle aspects of reality. In the genesis of most of them, we can see a conception of the video production where technology gets to a new sensitivity.
